Like a GP, a medical herbalist will refer out for any issue that is beyond the scope of safe practice.
A medical herbalist has studied orthodox medicine as well as plant medicine and is trained in the same diagnostic skills as a GP. However, herbalists take a holistic approach to illness, treating the underlying cause of disease rather than just the symptoms. They are able to prescribe herbal remedies to be used alongside other medication and treatments, and many patients are referred to a herbalist by their GP for treatment.

Phytoceuticals are natural molecules from a plant, with absolutely no modifications. Pharmaceutical drugs, on the other hand, are by law a synthetic molecule.
Although many pharmaceutical drugs were discovered in plants, the pharmaceutical companies made hundreds of synthetic variants of the plant molecule. They then performed clinical studies, filed patents and released these synthetic variants as “drugs.”
Herbal medicines contain the active constituent that is then isolated to create a drug, along with thousands of other compounds that stabilize the active compound, decreasing the risk for side effects and increasing the safety of the medicines.
Many drugs can safely be taken alongside herbal medicines when prescribed correctly. Herbs can also be prescribed to treat the side effects of many prescriptions medicines as well as to improve their efficacy.
